Academic Education and Career
In 1996, Konstantin Yu. Zhizhin graduated from the Department of Chemistry and Technology of Fine Organic Synthesis at the M.V. Lomonosov Institute of Fine Chemical Technologies.
He is a Deputy Director of the Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Deputy Chairman of the Expert Council of the Supreme Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation in Inorganic Chemistry, Deputy Chairman of the RAS Scientific Council in Inorganic Chemistry, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Russian Journal of Inorganic Chemistry, and Member of the Editorial Board of the Tonkie Khimicheskie Tekhnologii [Fine Chemical Technologies] journal.
Research Interests
Konstantin Yu. Zhizhin’s research addresses the following topics:
– New principles of chemical design of inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic boron-containing substances and materials, including compounds for binary therapy and precursors for refractory borides;
– New transition metal complexes based on substituted derivatives of boron clusters as ligands;
– Development of methods for functionalization of cluster anions of boron and their substituted derivatives, which became the basis for the creation of new inorganic boron-containing materials and electrochemical selective sensors;
– Study of basic patterns of reactivity of inorganic boron clusters and their substituted derivatives;
– Development of innovative methods for the preparation of boron-containing substances exhibiting unique properties, including compounds for binary radiotherapy, such as conjugates of meso-aryl-substituted porphyrins with nitrile derivatives of the closo-decaborate anion, amino acids, lipids, and cell complexes of metals. The synthesized conjugates can be used to prepare drugs for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer;
– Development of new types of theranostic agents for boron-neutron-capture therapy and MRI diagnosis, e.g., polydentate ligands based on the closo-decaborate anion capable of binding gadolinium (III) cations.
Publications and Academic Advising

Under his leadership, 8 candidate and 14 master’s theses were defended. He is also currently supervising one doctoral student and three postgraduate students. He is the head of the Russian Science Foundation grants and Russian Foundation for Basic Research grants, which supports leading scientific schools. Konstantin Yu. Zhizhin also leads 4 projects of the RAS Presidium programs.
Awards
Konstantin Yu. Zhizhin was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation in Science and Technology, L.A. Chugayev Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and two Major prizes of MAIK/Nauka.
