Academic Education and Career

Alexander M. Toikka graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry, St. Petersburg State University, in 1969. In 1972, he defended his candidate’s thesis titled “Questions of classification of triple liquid–vapor systems by the nature and magnitude of deviations from the ideality of binary components.” In 1996, he defended his doctoral dissertation titled “Thermodynamic analysis of equilibrium properties of heterogeneous systems based on stability theory.” Since 1999, he has held the position of the Head of the Department of Chemical Thermodynamics and Kinetics at the Institute of Chemistry, St. Petersburg State University. He is also the Head of the Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Membrane and Reaction Mass Exchanging Processes Group at the same department.

Alexander M. Toikka’s achievements:

Research Interests

– General, non-equilibrium, and chemical thermodynamics;

– Mixed reaction–mass transfer processes and chemical kinetics in heterogenous systems;

– Evolution of thermodynamic properties during combined processes;

– Use of non-equilibrium thermodynamics in theoretical chemical technology, investigation of the stability of multicomponent systems, phase separation, membrane separation, and reaction mass exchanging processes;

– Thermodynamic properties of natural gas and gas mixtures, also for industrial purposes;

– Experimental research on phase transitions, sorption, and thermal effects;

– Theory of thermodynamic stability, its development and use for analysis and modeling of chemical and phase processes in equilibrium and non-equilibrium systems;

– Membrane processes as well as experimental research and modeling of transmembrane transfer based on non-equilibrium thermodynamics;

– Natural biological membranes;

– Introduction of modifiers in polymer matrices. Use of scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-Ray spectroscopy for structural analysis. Thermochemistry studies and evaluation of thermodynamic properties;

– Conducting phase and membrane separation, including combined processes, such as distillation and extraction. Synthesis in a membrane reactor;

– New important membrane materials for pervaporation and gas separation.

Publications and Academic Advising

Alexander M. Toikka authored and co-authored more than 170 publications, including 112 research articles, 39 conference theses, 9 papers in conference materials, 3 papers in research digests, and 7 other publications.

A.M. Toikka supervised 11 candidate theses and 1 doctoral dissertation.
