Academic Career
Armando J. L. Pombeiro is a Full Professor Jubilado at the Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa). He is a Full Member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, where he has held various positions, including Secretary General and Vice President of the Class of Sciences. He is also a Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences. Armando J. L. Pombeiro is the Founding President of the College of Chemistry of the ULisboa and a former coordinator of the Centro de Química Estrutural and its “Synthesis and Catalysis” section. He is a coordinator of the “Coordination Chemistry and Catalysis” group, Founding Director of the PhD Program on the “Catalysis and Sustainability” (CATSUS), and a co-founder and former President of the Portuguese Electrochemical Society as well as a co-founder the Iberoamerican Society of Electrochemistry (SIBAE).
He chaired various major international conferences, including the 25th International Conference on Organometallic Chemistry (ICOMC 2012), 7th EuCheMS Conference on Nitrogen Ligands (2018), 1st International Conference on Non-Covalent Interactions (ICNI 2019), and the 22nd International Symposium on Homogeneous Catalysis (ISHC 2021). He has been a member of organizing or scientific committees of over 40 international conferences and schools. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Tonkie Khimicheskie Tekhnologii [Fine Chemical Technologies].
Research Interests
His research addresses the activation of small molecules of industrial, environmental, or biological significance. His research interests include:
– Metal-mediated synthesis and bioinspired homogeneous or supported catalysis under mild/sustainable conditions (e.g., functionalization of alkanes, oxidation of water, catalysis in the presence of water, alcohol and ketone oxidations, C–C couplings, utilization of CO2, catalysis in water, ionic liquids, supercritical media as well as under microwaves and mechanochemical conditions, metal-free catalysis);
– Crystal engineering of coordination compounds as well as design and self-assembly of polynuclear and supramolecular structures (e.g., coordination polymers and MOFs);
– Non-covalent interactions in synthesis;
– Coordination compounds with anti-tumor and anti-bacterial activity;
– Molecular electrochemistry;
– Theoretical studies.
Publications
Armando J. L. Pombeiro authored one book and was the editor of six books in the fields of alkane functionalization, organometallic chemistry and catalysis, non-covalent interactions in synthesis and catalysis, molecular electrochemistry, and unit operations in laboratory chemistry. He authored and co-authored approximately 850 research publications and 40 patents. He also presented about 120 invited plenary and keynote lectures at international conferences. His work has received approximately 23400 citations (9300 citing articles, h-index = 68) (Web of Science, May 2020).
Awards
Armando J. L. Pombeiro was awarded an Honorary Professorship by the St. Petersburg State University (Institute of Chemistry) as well as an Invited Chair Professorship by the National Taiwan University of Science & Technology. He was given the SCF French-Portuguese award by the French Chemical Society, Madinabeitia–Lourenço Prize by the Spanish Royal Chemical Society, Vanadis Award, Prizes of the Portuguese Chemical and Electrochemical Societies, and Scientific Prizes of the Technical ULisboa. Special issues of Coordination Chemistry Reviews and Journal of Organometallic Chemistry were published in his honor.
