Ivan A. Novakov’s scientific activity is associated with the development of the scientific basis for the synthesis, modification, and technology for the production of polymers and composite materials with unique properties.

Academic Education and Career

Ivan A. Novakov graduated from the Volzhsky Polytechnic Institute (VPI) in 1971.

In 1975, he defended his dissertation on the “Chemistry of High-Molecular Compounds” titled “Synthesis and study of polyimides based on adamantane derivatives” at the Institute of Organoelement Compounds of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1990, at the Institute of Chemistry of the Bashkiria Scientific Center of the Ural Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Ufa), he defended his doctoral dissertation on the “Chemistry of high-molecular weight compounds” titled “Synthesis and properties of adamantane-containing copolyamides and copolyimides.”

Since 1971, he has been working at the Volgograd State Technical University (former Volzhsky Polytechnic Institute). In 1988, he was elected as the rector of the VPI. From 1989 to 2014, he was the rector of the Volgograd State Technical University.

In 1991, he was appointed as a Professor. In the same year, he was also elected as the Head of the VPI Department of Physical, Analytical, and Physical Chemistry of Polymers.

In 2003, Ivan A. Novakov was elected as the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, specializing in Technical Chemistry. In 2011, Novakov was became a Full Member of the RAS. Since February 6, 2014 he has held the position of the President of the Volgograd State Technical University.

Research Interests

– Synthesis, modification, and technology for the production of polymers and composite materials exhibiting unique properties (e.g., heat resistance, increased hydrolytic resistance, fire resistance, polyelectrolyte, sorption properties, and fiber-forming ability) and high-performance characteristics;

– Synthesis of homopolymers with increased hydrolytic stability and strength. Based on adamantane-containing diamines, a series of new optical adhesives was developed, which have been introduced at a number of enterprises in the radio-electronic industry. Ivan A. Novakov’s research team developed the scientific basis for the radical polymerization of 1,2-dimethyl-5-vinylpyridinium methyl sulfate and its copolymerization with vinyl monomers;

– Synthesis of biologically active compounds and investigation of their properties;

– Synthesis of azomethine derivatives used as accelerators in vulcanization, stabilizers in thermooxidative aging, and adhesion promoters;

– Preparation of new polyelectrolytes, which have been effectively utilized as flocculants and coagulants in the treatment of drinking water and wastewater.

Ivan A. Novakov is a Member of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on high-molecular compounds, Organic Chemistry Section of the Expert Council on Chemistry of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation, and Chairman of the Dissertation Council at the Volgograd State Technical University. He is a scientific adviser for a number of councils of grant competitions of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. He is also the Chairman of the Dissertation Council of the Volgograd State Technical University.

Ivan A. Novakov is a member of the editorial boards of numerous chemical journals, including Chemical Industry Today, Glues. Sealants. Technologies, High-molecular compounds, Applied Chemistry, and Tonkie Khimicheskie Tekhnologii [Fine Chemical Technologies]. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Izvestia VolgSTU.
