Academic Education and Career

Aziz M. Muzafarov graduated from the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow Institute of Fine Chemical Technology in 1973. In 1981, he defended his candidate thesis titled “Polyfunctional organosilicon oligomers and heat-resistant polymers based on them.”

In 1997, he defended his doctoral dissertation titled “Organosilicon dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers” at the L.Ya. Karpov Institute of Physical Chemistry.

From 1973 to 1982 Aziz M. Muzafarov worked at the Scientific Council on Synthetic Materials of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1983, he started working at the N.S. Yenikolopov Institute of Synthetic Polymer Materials of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 1991, he has held the position of the Head of the Laboratory for the Synthesis of Organoelemental Polymers.

In 2000, Aziz M. Muzafarov was elected as the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

At the same time, since 2002, he has held the position of a Professor at the Department of Physics of Polymers and Crystals, Faculty of Physics, M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Since 2011, he has been a Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Department of Chemistry and Materials Science (section of chemical sciences).

Between 2013 and 2018, he was the Director of the A.N. Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds of the RAS.

Research Interests

– Synthesis of organosilicon compounds;

– Chemistry of organosilicon dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers;

– Synthesis of new organosilicon synthons, specifically sodiumoxyorganoalkoxysilanes, which form the basis for the production of organosilicon dendrimers exhibiting a siloxane skeleton.

In his works, Aziz M. Muzafarov formulated the criteria for hyperbranching and substantiated the preparation of a new generation of organosilicon materials. He also extended the theory of synthesis of hyper-branched polymers to macromonomers.

He is a Member of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on High-Molecular Compounds, Scientific Council of ISPM RAS, Dissertation Board of INEOS RAS, and GNIIKhTEOS. He is also a member of the Editorial Boards of the journals Izvestiya RAN Chemical Series, High-Molecular Compounds, Tonkie Khimicheskie Tekhnologii [Fine Chemical Technologies], and Silicon.

Aziz M. Muzafarov is a Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Andrianov Conference, Member of the Organizing Committee of the Karginsky Conference, Chairman of the Program Committee of the “Macromolecular nano-objects and polymer nanocomposites” conference. He is also the founder and head of the scientific school “Macromolecules-particles – a new form of macromolecular compounds.”

Publications and Academic Advising

Aziz M. Muzafarov is the author of over 200 academic publications and a holder of 30 international and Russian patents. Under his guidance, 4 students received the degrees of Candidates of Sciences.

Awards

The scientific value of Aziz M. Muzafarov’s work on nano-objects has been highly appreciated. In 1998, the he was granted the S.V. Lebedev Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
